WebI believe the "wife" in "old wives' tale" doesn't refer to "wife" as we know it, but to the Old English term for a woman. Hence, old women's tales. Same as "housewife." She's not married to a house, she's a woman who is associated with the house. So "alewife" for a woman bartender or "farm wife" for a female farmer.
